El ayuno, ¿es apto para todos?
El ayuno está de moda, ya que ha demostrado tener efectos antienvejecimiento, facilitar la pérdida de grasa, mejorar el estado de ánimo, proporcionar claridad mental y cognición aguda. La investigación incluso respalda el uso del ayuno intermitente para la prevención y tratamiento de trastornos cardiometabólicos potenciales. Pero incluso si el ayuno tiene estos efectos positivos, ¿eso significa que es apropiado para todos?
Las personas con diabetes tipo 2 pueden ayunar de manera segura, pero sólo bajo supervisión médica. Se puede recomendar a las personas que toman ciertos medicamentos que eviten el ayuno o que revisen con su médico para hacer los ajustes necesarios a los medicamentos que generalmente se toman con alimentos, o cuya potencia o farmacología puede verse afectada por el ayuno.
El ayuno no se recomienda para las mujeres embarazadas o en período de lactancia, ni para las adolescentes en una etapa de crecimiento activo. Tampoco se recomienda que cualquier persona con un trastorno alimentario o un historial de trastorno alimentario adopte una práctica de ayuno.
Otro grupo de personas para quienes no se recomienda el ayuno son los ancianos, excepto bajo supervisión médica. Muchas personas mayores ya están consumiendo menos proteínas. No sería prudente que una persona que ya experimenta sarcopenia o dinapenia se vuelva aún más deficiente en proteínas o desnutrida en general.
Para las personas que prefieren no ayunar o para quienes no se recomienda el ayuno, ciertas prácticas pueden ayudar a inducir algunos de los beneficios del ayuno incluso en ausencia de restricción calórica. Por ejemplo, la dieta cetogénica muy baja en carbohidratos y rica en grasas es una poderosa estrategia nutricional para reducir la glucosa en la sangre y los niveles de insulina.
